The Hand of Nature

Wang Yuhui, The Hand of Nature, ink on Korean rice paper, 51cm x 48cm

Wang Yuhui (Chinese, b. 1956) powerfully conveys environmental commentary through the media of ink and oil painting. In the image above, a mountain is a hand that gently protects a village nestled in its palm. By contrast, in the image below, the nurturing and protective force of the mountain is undermined by the rapid urbanisation of China and the ensuing pollution. The pollution is washed off with soapy scum, its garishly pinkish bubbles emphasizing the ugliness of what is being done.

Wang Yuhui, Why?, 2010, oil on canvas, 112cm x 45.5cm
